Mahan, Alfred Thayer
(27 sep. 1840, West Point, N.Y., EE.UU.–1 dic. 1914, Quogue, N.Y.).

Oficial naval e historiador estadounidense. Estudió en la Academia naval de EE.UU., y sus casi 40 años de servicio naval activo incluyeron combate en la guerra de Secesión. Fue director de la escuela naval de guerra, en Newport, EE.UU. (1886–89). Su obra de análisis clásica La influencia del poder marítimo en la historia, 1660–1783 (1890) sostenía que el poder naval era decisivo en determinar la supremacía nacional. En La influencia del poder marítimo sobre la Revolución francesa y el imperio, 1793–1812 (1892), enfatizaba la interdependencia del control militar y comercial del mar. Leídos con avidez en Gran Bretaña y Alemania, ambos libros influenciaron enormemente la expansión de las fuerzas navales anteriores a la primera guerra mundial.
